Meckels diverticulum

Meckels Diverticulum 

Meckels it is most common anomaly of small intestine , which is due to failure of obliteration of Vitellinointestinal duct 

It is true diverticulum ( as it contains all 3 layes of intestine )

located with in 100 cms from IC junction 

Most common cause of lower GI bleeding in children which is found in 2 % of population 

There can be ectopic gastric mucosa 

Inv - technitium-99m pertechnate scan is used to evaluate presence of Meckels , hence false positive can occur in case of duplication cyst with ectopic gastric mucosa

Note - TCh-99m is specific for ectopic gastric mucosa which is highly sensitive in adults as well as paediatric 

Treatment - depends on Size at the base or symptoms - If symptomatic resection and anastamosis or if wide base can be left with out resection
