what is FEV ? importance in preoperative period ?
It is Forced expiratory volume
its volume of air that is forced out after deep inspiartion
its calculated in terms of seconds first FEV1 indicates amout of air that is forced out after deep inspiration in 1st seccond { nomal value is 75%}
it measures lung function , diagnose obstructive lung disease like asthma , copd - they have lower value FEV1
normal values depends in age , sex ,
age 20 - 60yrs normal values - 3.5 to 4.5 liters [ FEV 1 - 75% ]
if FEV1 < 1.5 Litres- at risk of Pneumonia as they cannot clear secretions post operatively
